THE HISTORY OF SEK
What started as a privately run business by the White family out of the Wollongong City Raceway premises in the 1990's, Prokart grew to be a traveling endurance series in both QLD and NSW by the early 2000's. The series continued to grow over the years until an unexpected change caused the teams to merge with the Goulburn Kart Racing Club and run the races under the Karting Australia banner.
The club was growing to its biggest number of race entries and we were in a position to purchase the latest timing system from MyLaps and the best Track Safety Lights from Alitrax.
There was a new period of uncertainty looming with the Honda engine homolagation not being approved by Karting Australia. It slowed our growth as we did not have a definitive future. It eventually led our members to vote and move our race meetings away from Karting Australia. This enabled the club to have a more stable and controlled future.
The series is now run by the members under the control of the Australian Auto Sport Alliance with more freedom and control handed back to the committee and members to enhance the growth of the series.
There have been many influential members over the years ranging from professional drivers through to some very well respected amateurs.
In recent times the club has sadly farewelled a couple of distinguished members. Firstly Mikey Briton who sadly passed in early 2017. Mikey was a very well respected driver and a great personality. He came from a family of racers, Mikey's father was a former Australian Sprintcar Champion.
More recently the club mourned the loss of Wendy Lucas. Wendy worked tirelessly during the period of switching to Karting Australia. Wendy committed so much of her time over this period and the club owes her a great amount of gratitude for everything she achieved. Not only a champion in her administration work for the club but one hell of a competitor. Wendy brought with her a whole family of members including son William, a long time competitor, Husband Graham as a team manager and committee member, Daughter Emma who assisted with first aid, Father Neil also assisting with first aid and our current Clerk of Course Allan Southern being Wendy's son in law.
The Sportsman Class championship is named in Wendy's honour and the winner will receive the coverted Purple Plate
